Getting to Know: Richard & Maura

Getting to Know: Richard & Maura - Hosts, Milongueros & Friends

For this month’s edition of "Getting to Know A TriANGulistO I spoke with Richard and Maura, the charismatic hosts of TriANGulO’s afternoon milonga. These hosts can transform an ordinary milonga into an extraordinary experience. At Tri’s afternoon milonga you’re greeted with a smile, a kiss, and quite possibly a meow…..

Q: How did you meet one another?
Maura (M): We met in Carina’s class at 14th Street. I was invited to a class by a friend of Tri and I meet Richard. We were friends at first sight! This was around January 2004 he was a beginner too and our dancing grew.
Richard (R): I met Maura the first night she came to Triangulo for class. We spoke for a while, I drove her home and that was the start of a beautiful friendship.

Q: When did you start hosting milongas?
R: Triangulo use to host a milonga in the open space toward 10th Ave. in the Chelsea Market. It ran for about eight years. I started helping out in the seventh year and Maura joined me for the last year.
M: We hosted the milonga at Chelsea market for ages…

Q: How are you able to continually host so many successful milongas! What do you believe are the essential elements to hosting milonga?
R: Most milongas have a certain character to them and therefore attracts different groups within the Tango community. Of the many elements involved I'd say it's important for people to feel welcome. I like to think that sometimes when you are not having a great dance night you can still feel good just being here. You need a good DJ who can please the dancers. And I
think one of the best things about the Afternoon Milonga is that we attract beginners, intermediates and experienced dancers to a funky salon like atmosphere. That room feels magical at twilight.
M: Being present! Welcoming people as they come into the studio. Lots of talking, hugs, smiles, joy, and laughter. Sometimes the simple act of showing a new person where the restroom is, or pointing out the bar or helping someone find their coat with a flashlight can make the difference in someone’s evening.

Q: Richard you’re also a DJ. Which do you prefer Cortinas or No-cortinas?
R: I love cortinas. When I DJ I have fun picking what cortina to introduce the next tanda - disco or Sinatra to introduce Canaro or Donato.

Q: What method do you prefer to ask someone to dance? Conversation or cabeceo?
M: TALKING!! ::BIG SMILE:: Asking people to dance is based on a conversation. It’s an honor and a privilege to initiate the dialogue. The milonga on Fridays builds the growth of my circle of connection of people that I am able to associate with. As a woman in NYC I feel grateful to be able invite people to dance. It wasn’t always like that - - the insecurities, fears, and doubts….. however you need to earn your milonga miles and attend the milongas and get to know the people and get to know those dances. I’ve met so many people based on the trust that Carina’s placed in me and Richard with the afternoon milonga.

Q: Any advice to beginners that are thinking about going to their first milonga?
R: I went to a couple of milongas before I met Maura and it was demoralizing. But then groups of us from our class at Triangulo started meeting at different milongas and we would dance with each other. Dance a bit and watch a lot, you'll get ideas of how you want to dance. Of course the beginners’ practica on Wednesday at Triangulo is a great way to get started.
M: Come to the Friday & Saturday (seasonal) milonga(s)! They run on the same philosophy of openness, inclusiveness and joy. As you begin to feel safe and supported you can begin to try other places. Your self-esteem and confidence will be challenged but sitting and watching is a part of the agony and ecstasy of this dance. Putting in your ‘milonga miles’ is very important part to your development. And remember observation is a very important tool in a tango dancer’s growth.

Q: How would explain the difference between a practica and a milonga
M: Practicas you can meet up with people and actually work. You don’t have to worry about the codes and etiquette of a milonga. You can pick apart your technique and practice. You can stop and start and work it out.

At a milonga some men like to instruct some women. However, there should not be overt conversational teaching taking place on the dance floor - - no analyzing picking and poking or probing. It’s not of the same flavor or design of the practica. However, you can observe dancers and learn things. At one milonga Richard was hosting there was a gentleman that was instructing a lady. As a host he asked the gentleman to stop and reminded him that it was milonga.

Richard and Maura are the hosts for TriANGulO’s Friday afternoon milonga. Together this perfectly balanced duo creates a friendly, welcoming, fun milonga every Friday afternoon.
